Hey there!
I’m Dean Walters, and Space & Lasers is my blog.
I’m a neurodivergent (AuDHD) fiction writer who likes to write sci-fi stories.
All my life, I’ve loved storytelling. From writing short stories in primary school to making short films at university. I studied a Bachelor of Film Production straight out of High School, where I had misguided dreams of becoming a famous filmmaker. Back then, I wrote a lot of my stories in screenplay format, hoping to catch a break and be able to see them made.
The reality is though, the film industry is hard. It requires a lot of networking, something I’m terrible at. And I learned that it wasn’t the best way for me to tell my stories. I eventually discovered a novel would better allow me to truly share my stories with minimal limitations. One day I hope to share my novels with the world.
After years of bouncing around a bunch of ideas, I decided to focus my time on two series that really resonated with me: Nash and Highton Heroes. Taking time out to write is not only a fun passtime, but it also drives me as a person. It opens my mind to creativity; it helps me approach each day with passion, and it provides a certain comfort that’s hard to explain.
Why the interest in sci-fi? As a neurodivergent introvert, High School wasn’t really a fun time. I’d always had an interest in technology and the future. I think combining that with a yearning to escape led me to become a huge fan of the sci-fi genre. Growing up, I loved reading sci-fi books, watching sci-fi TV/movies and playing sci-fi video games. I loved falling into these worlds and feeling like I was there. While reality could be disappointing, these were always an exciting escape. It became an even more fun escape when I started writing my own adventures.
This blog is my place to share a peek at the worlds of my two novel series, along with my thoughts on writing and all the things that inspired me to become a creative writer when growing up.
So, take a look around, and I hope you find something that interests you! I know I mentioned I was an introvert, but please reach out if you ever want to talk about anything on my blog or my writing – it’s a topic I love to talk with others about!
