Hey there!
My name’s Dean Walters, and I’m the guy behind Space & Lasers.
All my life, I’ve loved storytelling. From writing short stories in primary school to making short films at university and finally to the two major projects I work on now in my spare time.
Through my Bachelor of Film Production, I gained a solid understanding of visual storytelling and writing for the screen. But learning NEVER stops. I’ve since spent a lot of time delving further into not only the craft of screenwriting but the craft of good storytelling and novel writing.
Learning this craft is hard because there’re things you’ll hear that are objective, and a lot that is subjective. It’s taken me a long time to wrangle what I know into these two categories, and I’m still deciphering more every day.
After years of bouncing around a bunch of ideas, I decided to focus my time on two series that really resonated with me: Nash and Highton Heroes. Taking time out to write is not only a fun pass time, but it also drives me as a person. It opens my mind to creativity, it helps me approach each day with passion and it provides a certain comfort that’s hard to explain.
Why the interest in sci-fi? As a major introvert, High School wasn’t really a fun time. I’d always had an interest in technology and the future. I think combining that with a yearning to escape, led me to become a huge fan of the sci-fi genre. Growing up, I loved reading sci-fi books, watching sci-fi TV/movies and playing sci-fi video games. I loved falling into these worlds and feeling like I was there. While reality could be disappointing, these were always an exciting escape. It became an even more fun escape when I started writing my own adventures.
And that leads me to this blog, and why it exists. There’s no point in me writing my stories and keeping them to myself. Now, I’m probably not going to share whole screenplays or novels on the blog, at least for the time being. But I want to talk about what I’m working on, share snippets and worldbuilding, and discuss all the different sci-fi series that got me to where I am.
So, take a look around, and I hope you find something that interests you! I know I said I was an introvert, but I am always keen to chat in the comments or on socials with all the other writers out there!
